A Note on Bible Translations

Recently in Hebrew class, a student asked Dr. Duguid on picking Bible translations to preach from and how to way in "word for word accuracy" like the New American Standard, and the dynamical translations of the 2oth and 21st century?

I have been wondering the same thing lately as I bought the Holman Christian Standard Version for $10, since then I am doing some sort of mild comparison to the ESV. Duguid said that when he was in Libya he preached from a Bible with an 850 word vocabulary, something that he would not do here. Because the Liberians do not know English well and he did not want to confuse them. His preaching style was similar in that context as well (a major proof that it is a huge plus if you know the indigenous language). But for biblical students, why not use the NASB as it captures the Hebrew and Greek idioms and captures the choppiness of a direct translation, it reveals that we need something more. What do you need in the context you are in? Are you in Libya, are you in the theological classroom? Or are you in the pulpit Sunday morning preaching to a crowd of infants and youth, college students, parents, singles, old saints, the unconverted - what version are you going to use there where people can understand what is going on in the Scriptures?

What should one use in their devotions? Are you a student of the Scriptures who knows the Hebrew and Geek idioms, why not use the New American Standard. Are you a new believer who is seeking to understand words like imputation and justification? Bit more tricky, but try the English Standard Version, clear, concise, readable yet keeping with the rich heritage of the reformation.

"Merely to be lukewarm about Jesus is to commit cosmic treason against the one who will reign forever. It is a dangerous business. But we who are Christians welcome Jesus not because we have to, but because we delight. We want to. For we know the cost of his kingship.

His humility went much further than riding a donkey, we know of a King who took off his own garments so he could wash his disciples' feet. For the sake of the people carrying a cross on ripped shoulders, and a King who collapsed under that cross, a King whose hands were pierced, a brow crowed with thorns. And a King crying out, "Why have you forsaken me?!"

We know a righteous one who was treated as if He were tainted by all manner of sins under the curse of God. We know that he was not able to save himself. And we know why this King did all these things. It was for my deeds! for my thoughts! my King suffered to save me!!! To remake me into His image!!! He was treated as the sinner, that I may be righteous, this was the only way to be saved.

We bow down in worship, not because we have to, but because He is worthy. A King whose throne is the cross, whose crown is thorns, a gentle, loving king. There is no other savior who can deliver you from yourself, your self-centeredness. Is this the one who you delight in and love to serve? Who else has cared for you? Who deserves your praise and adoration?
Do you recognize his kingship? Everyone will bow, not just those who follow Him..."

"'The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.' The whole earth is full of God's glory. The chief incentive in subduing the earth and the chief end to be promoted by it would have been the discovery and exhibition of the manifold wisdom and power of God. We know how intriguing, even to godless men, is the scientific quest, and how untiring are their labours to discover the secrets of what they call nature. How incomparably more intriguing and defeatlessly rewarding would have been the quest of sinless man when, at every step of his path and in every detail of progressive understanding, the marvels of the Creator's wisdom, power, goodness, righteousness, and lovingkindness would have broken in upon his heart and mind, and every new discovery, every additional conquest, would have given cause afresh for the adoration, 'O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches' (Psalm 104:24). We get a glimpse of the stupendous undertaking and the unspeakable glory of it all. We begin, perhaps, to understand a little of what culture should be. This is the culture that would have engaged and inspired man if he had been confirmed in his integrity. It would have been culture untiringly inspired by the apprehension of the Creator's glory and by the passion to apprehend and exalt that glory more. That our culture is so little inspired by that ideal is but proof that man has fallen. That any of this culture is found in the earth is proof of redemptive grace." – John Murray

The above is a quote taken from the Sovereign Grace Ministries Website, the beloved group of churches under the leadership of Mahaney. They are launching a worldview conference for those within their fellowship of which one of the keynote speakers is Dr. Iain Duguid. Should be enlightening for sure.

A prayer request - the beloved brothers from Christ Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Sheridan Indiana had their congregational building burned down on Monday. My good buddy Gilbert is from that church where his dad is an elder. Please uphold these brothers and sisters in prayer.
